Unknown facts about largest river – Amazon River

The Amazon River (Rio Amazon in Portuguese and Spanish) is a huge river that flows into South America. The Amazon River originates in the Andes Mountains in western South America. It flows east into the Atlantic Ocean from there. It flows through Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador. Most of the River and many of its tributaries lie in Brazil.

Earth’s largest river

The Amazon River is the largest river in the earth by volume of water. The amount of water in this river is more than the sum of water for the next eight largest rivers. This River is also the second-longest river in the world. It travels about 6400 kilometers in length.

Amazon is the largest drainage basin in the world. This is about one-fifth of the total water flow of the world. The breadth of some parts of the Amazon exceeds 120 miles (190 km) during the rainy season. Due to its sheer size, it is sometimes referred to as ‘The River Sea‘.

Due to its wide width, there is a lack of bridges on this river. About thirty million people from nine countries live on the edges of the Amazon. These countries are Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, and Suriname. Of these, two-thirds of the population is from Brazil.

The Amazon is a center of biodiversity and there is an abundance of fauna and flora. The 6,437 km long river flow through the Amazon rainforest is the second-longest river in the world. Amazon contributes 20 percent of the sweet water that goes into the world’s seas.
