Interesting facts about Elephants

The elephant is the largest land animal. At present, only two species of elephants are alive, Elephas and Loxodonta. Apart from this, there were only one species Mammoths which now does not extinct. Elephas species are found in Africa and Loxodonta are found in India.

It is the heaviest land animal in the world. Usually, they weigh up to 10 thousand kg. Some very large elephants can weigh up to 32 thousand kg.

Let’s know interesting and amazing facts about elephants:-

  • At present, only two species of elephants are left. Various fossils found in the world have shown that about 170 species of them were found 50 million years ago. These fossils have been found in all continents except Australia and Antarctica.
  • Elephants do not lie down but sleep while standing. They sleep maximum for 4 hours a day.

  • It is the only animal that has four knees and cannot jump.
  • A female elephant gives birth to a child every 4 years. They have an average gestation period of 22 months. Twins are born in 1 percent of cases. Twins are born in 1 percent of cases. The length of the newly born is about 83 centimeters and weighs up to 112 kg.
  • The softest part of its body is behind their ear, which is called knuckle. Mahants who handle elephants use their feet to direct elephants through a knoll.
  • The skin of an elephant is about an inch thick. An elephant can also pick up a small coin dropped on the floor with its trunk.
  • The length of an adult African elephant can be up to 13 feet, while the length of an Indian one is 10 feet. The ears of African is larger than the ears of the Indian elephant. Its life span is an average of 70 years. The herd is also headed by an older male or female elephant.
  • Its teeth continue to grow their whole life.
  • The trunk of the elephant is attached to the upper lip and nose.
  • They have the largest brains in animals.
  • Male elephants leave the herd between 12 and 15 years of age.
