Review

This app/book version of Hawking's famous laymen book is just an amazing piece of learning. This makes much more accessible and understandable the complex and awesome topics dealt by Hawking as he explains how our universe works. I am just in awe at how creative he is to produce one of a kind e-book like this. The pace, illustrations and connections of topics within the book are so helpful and so appropriate for the new generation used to tweets and small bites of information. You can flip over some topics when you have some time, learn some amazing fact, and come back later which no rush or worry about how fast you are progressing through the book. Hope other books on complex topics are translated to this format. And I love the updates of the latest science since the publication of the original book. We have learned so much in the last decade that I agree with Hawking, it is an honour to live in this times. ― Ribozyme

'Master of the Universe...One scientist's courageous voyage to the frontiers of the Cosmos' ―
Newsweek

'This book marries a child's wonder to a genius's intellect. We journey into Hawking's universe, while marvelling at his mind' ―
The Sunday Times

'He can explain the complexities of cosmological physics with an engaging combination of clarity and wit...His is a brain of extraordinary power' ―
Observer

'To follow such a fine mind as it exposes such great problems is an exciting experience' ―
The Sunday Times

Stephen Hawking's ability to make science understandable and compelling to a lay audience was established with the publication of his first book, A Brief History of Time, which has sold nearly 10 million copies in 40 languages. Hawking has authored or participated in the creation of numerous other popular science books, including The Universe in a Nutshell, A Briefer History of Time, On the Shoulders of Giants, The Illustrated On the Shoulders of Giants, and George's Secret Key to the Universe.

A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking is a classic work of science writing that has captured the imagination of readers around the world. The book is a tour de force of popular science, deftly explaining complex concepts in a way that is both accessible and engaging.

Hawking begins by tracing the development of our understanding of the universe from the ancient Greeks to the present day. He then goes on to discuss the Big Bang, black holes, and other cosmological phenomena. Along the way, he provides insights into the nature of space and time, the laws of physics, and the ultimate fate of the universe.

A Brief History of Time is not an easy book to read. The concepts it discusses are complex and require a certain level of mathematical knowledge. However, Hawking does an excellent job of explaining these concepts in a way that is both clear and concise. He also uses analogies and metaphors to help readers understand the more difficult concepts.

One of the things that makes A Brief History of Time so special is Hawking's own sense of wonder. He is clearly fascinated by the universe and its mysteries, and he is able to convey this excitement to his readers. The book is full of insights and observations that will make you think about the universe in a new way.

If you are interested in learning more about the universe, A Brief History of Time is an essential read. It is a book that will challenge you, but it is also a book that will reward you with a deeper understanding of the cosmos.

Here are some of the things that I liked about the book:

Hawking's clear and concise writing style.
The use of analogies and metaphors to explain complex concepts.
Hawking's own sense of wonder and excitement about the universe.
The insights and observations that the book provides.
If you are looking for a book that will challenge you intellectually and make you think about the universe in a new way, then I highly recommend A Brief History of Time.

I read the book first when it was released.

*** After several decades I bought it afresh and started reading
*** Amazingly simple explanation of a range of topics
*** Only a minimal knowledge of science (+II level) is sufficient to understand 80% of the book

Highly recommended for power-readers in physics

“A Brief History Of Time” is an exceptional, scientific non-fiction, written by Stephen Hawking. It broke records, being an international bestseller for 237 weeks. In this book, the author sheds lights on mind-bending facts and theories about our universe. Topics covered in this book range from black holes, to space-time and gravity.
Stephen Hawking is an eminent personality in the world of Science. He has been regarded as the best theoretical physicist, since Einstein. His profound knowledge in astrophysics and theoretical physics is reflected in this book. He works on the theories about the universe and the basic laws governing the actions in the universe. He other successful works include ‘The Theory of Everything’ and ‘The Grand Design’.
There is a common misconception about the book, that the reader must be extremely well versed in the subject to understand it. As someone who belonged to the category of the ‘less comfortable with science’, I can safely deny such claims, as the author has adeptly written this book in a manner which can be understood by all. He has explained every concept very well, considering the fact that these theories require deep understanding of physics and mathematics. He has done his best to simplify the ideas to a form that any reader can comprehend. For instance, Hawking has explained the space-time by giving appropriate examples. His consummate explanations comprise of suitable diagrams, historical perspective, modern perspective and good examples.
I must warn that, although this book is not esoteric, it does require the rudimentary knowledge of physics. The reader must be aware of terms such as ‘velocity’ and ‘gravity’, to name a few. If the reader has come to grips with the prerequisites, there is no denial of the fact that this is an excellent, didactic book for the inquisitive minds, eager to learn about the different, unexplored phenomena of the world. If one had questions regarding nature, such as whether time could move backwards, or whether our universe is expanding, he must buy and read this book. It is a journey, at the end of which the reader would come out as a better man, with a different perception of the universe. As Hawking once said, “My goal is simple. It is the complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is, and why it exists at all.”

Don’t kid yourselves, there’s a lot in this book that’s difficult to understand. Sometimes, you have to read through entire paragraphs knowing full well that you have no clue about what you’re reading, and just hoping that somewhere towards the end it will make sense… mostly that’s what happens.

From the origins of the universe to the idea of time travel and the direction of time; from multiverses and wormholes to the very edge of the science vs theology debate, this book is one of the most intellectually exhilarating (and challenging) ones you can hope to read.
