The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Supreme Court later overturned the conviction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1977<\/strong> &#8211; The Trans-Alaska Pipeline began operation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979<\/strong> &#8211; ABC News correspondent Bill Stewart was shot to death in Managua, Nicaragua, by a member of President Anastasio Somoza&#8217;s national guard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983<\/strong> &#8211; The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that employers must treat male and female workers equally in providing health benefits for their spouses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997<\/strong> &#8211; The tobacco industry agreed to a massive settlement in exchange for major relief from mounting lawsuits and legal bills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001<\/strong> &#8211; Barry Bonds (San Francisco Giants) hit his 38th home run of the season. The home run broke the\u00a0major league baseball record\u00a0for homers before the midseason All-Star break.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002<\/strong> &#8211; The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the execution of mentally retarded murderers was unconstitutionally cruel.
