1909<\/strong> – Glenn Hammond Curtiss sold his first airplane, the “Gold Bug” to the New York Aeronautical Society for $5,000.<\/p>\n

1922<\/strong> – Henry Berliner accomplished the first helicopter flight at College Park,\u00a0MD.<\/p>\n

1925<\/strong> – France accepted a German proposal for a security pact.<\/p>\n

1932<\/strong> – The ban on Nazi storm troopers was lifted by the von Papen government in Germany.<\/p>\n

1940<\/strong> – Marshal Henri-Philippe Petain became the prime minister of the Vichy government of occupied France.<\/p>\n

1941<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt\u00a0ordered the closure of all German consulates in the\u00a0United States. The deadline was set as July 10.<\/p>\n

1972<\/strong> – Ulrike Meinhof was captured by West German police in Hanover. She was the co-founder of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group and the Red Army Faction (Rote Armee Fraktion).<\/p>\n

1975<\/strong> – The Simonstown agreement on naval cooperation between Britain and South Africa ended. The agreement was formally ended by mutual agreement after 169 years.<\/p>\n

1976<\/strong> – In Soweto, thousands of school children revolted against the South African government’s plan to enforce Afrikaans as the language for instruction in black schools.<\/p>\n

1977<\/strong> – Leonid Brezhnev was named the first Soviet president of the USSR. He was the first person to hold the post of president and Communist Party General Secretary. He replaced Nikolai Podgorny.<\/p>\n

1978<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President Carter\u00a0and Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos ratified the Panama Canal treaties.<\/p>\n

1978<\/strong> – The film adaptation of “Grease” premiered in New York City.<\/p>\n

1981<\/strong> – The “Chicago Tribune” purchased the Chicago Cubs baseball team from the P.K. Wrigley Chewing Gum Company for $20.5 million.<\/p>\n

1983<\/strong> – Yuri Andropov was elected chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. The position was the equivalent of the president.<\/p>\n

1984<\/strong> – Wilson Ferreira Aldunate was arrested upon his return from an eleven-year exile. Aldunate had been a popular Uruguayan opposition leader.<\/p>\n

1985<\/strong> – Willie Banks broke the world record for the triple jump with a leap of 58 feet, 11-1\/2 inches in the U.S.A. championships in Indianapolis, IN.<\/p>\n

1992<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President George H.W. Bush\u00a0welcomed Russian President Boris Yeltsin to a meeting in Washington, DC. The two agreed in principle to reduce strategic weapon arsenals by about two-thirds by the year 2003.<\/p>\n

1993<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S. Postal Service released a set of seven stamps that featured Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Clyde McPhatter, Otis Redding, Ritchie Valens, Dinah Washington, and Elvis Presley.<\/p>\n

1996<\/strong> – Russian voters had their first independent presidential election. Boris Yeltsin was the winner after a run-off.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Circuit Court of Appeals said that a 1992 federal music piracy law does not prohibit a palm-sized device that can download high-quality digital music files from the Internet and play them at home.<\/p>\n

2000<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S.\u00a0federal regulators approved the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE Corp. The merger created the nation’s largest local phone company.<\/p>\n
