1900<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S.\u00a0troops arrived in Peking to help put down the Boxer Rebellion.<\/p>\n

1902<\/strong> – The Boer War ended between the Boers of South Africa and Great Britain with the Treaty of Vereeniging.<\/p>\n

1907<\/strong> – The first taxis arrived in New York City. They were the first in the\u00a0United States.<\/p>\n

1909<\/strong> – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held its first conference.<\/p>\n

1910<\/strong> – The Union of South Africa was founded.<\/p>\n

1913<\/strong> – The 17th Amendment went into effect. It provided for popular election of\u00a0U.S.\u00a0senators.<\/p>\n

1915<\/strong> – A German zeppelin made an air raid on London.<\/p>\n

1927<\/strong> – Ford Motor Company produced the last “Tin Lizzie” in order to begin production of the Model A.<\/p>\n

1929<\/strong> – In Beverly,\u00a0MA, the first\u00a0U.S.\u00a0born reindeer were born.<\/p>\n

1941<\/strong> – The first issue of “Parade: The Weekly Picture Newspaper” went on sale.<\/p>\n

1943<\/strong> – “Archie” was aired on the Mutual Broadcasting System for the first time.<\/p>\n

1947<\/strong> – Communists seized control of Hungary.<\/p>\n

1955<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Supreme Court ordered that all states must end racial segregation “with all deliberate speed.”<\/p>\n

1961<\/strong> – South Africa became an independent republic.<\/p>\n

1962<\/strong> – Adolf Eichmann was hanged in Israel. Eichmann was a Gestapo official and was executed for his actions in the Nazi Holocaust.<\/p>\n

1970<\/strong> – An earthquake in Peru killed tens of thousands of people.<\/p>\n

1974<\/strong> – Israel and Syria signed an agreement on the Golan Heights.<\/p>\n

1977<\/strong> – The trans-Alaska oil pipeline was finished after 3 years of construction.<\/p>\n

1979<\/strong> – Zimbabwe proclaimed its independence.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0announced it was no longer aiming long-range nuclear missiles at targets in the former Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

1995<\/strong> – Bob Dole singled out Time Warner for “the marketing of evil” in movies and music. Dole later admitted that he had not seen or heard much of what he had been criticizing.<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong> – In\u00a0North Carolina, Eric Robert Rudolph was captured. He had been on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list for five years for several bombings including the 1996 Olympic bombing.<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Vanity Fair<\/i>\u00a0reveals that\u00a0Mark Felt\u00a0was “Deep Throat”.<\/p>\n

2008<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Usain Bolt\u00a0breaks the world record in the 100m sprint, with a wind-legal (+1.7m\/s) 9.72 seconds<\/p>\n

2010<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Israeli\u00a0Shayetet 13\u00a0commandos\u00a0boarded\u00a0the Gaza Freedom Flotilla while still in international waters trying to break the\u00a0ongoing blockade\u00a0of the\u00a0Gaza Strip; nine Turkish civilians on the flotilla were killed in the ensuing violent affray.<\/p>\n

2013<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a0asteroid\u00a01998 QE2\u00a0and its\u00a0moon\u00a0make their\u00a0closest approach to Earth\u00a0for the next two centuries.<\/p>\n

2013<\/strong> \u2013 A record-breaking 2.6-mile-wide tornado\u00a0struck\u00a0El Reno, Oklahoma\u00a0causing eight fatalities and over 150 injuries.<\/p>\n

2017<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A\u00a0car bomb exploded\u00a0in a crowded intersection in\u00a0Kabul\u00a0near the\u00a0German embassy\u00a0during rush hour, killing over 90 and injuring 463.<\/p>\n
