1912<\/strong> – Royal Flying Corps was established in England.<\/p>\n

1913<\/strong> – Igor Sikorsky flew the first four-engine aircraft.<\/p>\n

1917<\/strong>\u00a0– Near Fatima, Portugal, three peasant children reported seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n

1918<\/strong> – The first airmail postage stamps were issued with airplanes on them. The denominations were 6, 16, and 24 cents.<\/p>\n

1927<\/strong> – “Black Friday” occurred in Germany.<\/p>\n

1940<\/strong>\u00a0– Winston Churchill made his first speech as the prime minister of Britain.<\/p>\n

1949<\/strong> – The first gas turbine to pump natural gas was installed in Wilmar, AR.<\/p>\n

1954<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President Eisenhower\u00a0signed into law the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Act.<\/p>\n

1958<\/strong> – French troops took control of Algiers.<\/p>\n

1958<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Vice President Nixon’s limousine was battered by rocks thrown by anti-U.S.\u00a0demonstrators in Caracas, Venezuela.<\/p>\n

1967<\/strong> – Mickey Mantle hit his 500th home run.<\/p>\n

1968<\/strong> – Peace talks between the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0and North Vietnam began in Paris.<\/p>\n

1975<\/strong> – Hailstones the size of tennis balls hit Waterville, TN.<\/p>\n

1982<\/strong> – The Chicago Cubs became the first\u00a0major league baseball\u00a0team to win 8,000 games.<\/p>\n

1985<\/strong> – Tony Perez became the oldest\u00a0major league baseball\u00a0player to hit a grand slam home run at the age of 42 and 11 months.<\/p>\n

1985<\/strong> – A confrontation between Philadelphia authorities and the radical group MOVE ended as police dropped an explosive onto the group’s headquarters. Eleven people died in the fire that resulted.<\/p>\n

1998<\/strong> – India did a second round of nuclear tests. The first round had been done 2 days earlier. Within hours the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0and Japan imposed tough economic sanctions. India claimed that the tests were necessary to maintain India’s national security.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong> – In Moscow, the impeachment of Russian President Boris Yeltsin began.<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong>\u00a0– The U.S. government unveiled a newly designed version of the $20 bill. It was the first to be colorized in an effort to stop counterfeiters.<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Andijan uprising,\u00a0Uzbekistan; Troops open fire on crowds of protestors after a prison break; at least 187 people were killed according to official estimates.<\/p>\n

2006<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0S\u00e3o Paulo violence: Rebellions occur in several prisons in Brazil.<\/p>\n

2011<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Two bombs explode\u00a0in the\u00a0Charsadda District\u00a0of Pakistan killing 98 people and wounding 140 others.<\/p>\n

2012<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Forty-nine dismembered bodies are\u00a0discovered\u00a0by Mexican authorities on\u00a0Mexican Federal Highway 40.<\/p>\n

2013<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Kermit Gosnell, a\u00a0U.S.\u00a0abortion\u00a0physician, is found guilty in\u00a0Pennsylvania of three counts of murder of newborn infants, one count of involuntary manslaughter, and various other charges. <\/sup><\/sup>In total, more than 100 babies were killed at Gosnell’s abortion clinic.<\/sup><\/p>\n

2014<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 An\u00a0explosion\u00a0at an underground coal mine in southwest\u00a0Turkey\u00a0kills 301 miners.<\/p>\n
