They did not depart until 1933.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1932<\/strong> &#8211; Jack Benny&#8217;s first radio show debuted on NBC Radio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1933<\/strong> &#8211; Hitler banned trade unions in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1939<\/strong> &#8211; Lou Gehrig set a new\u00a0major league baseball\u00a0record when he played in his 2,130th game. The streak began on June 1, 1925.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1941<\/strong> &#8211; Hostilities broke out between British forces in Iraq and that country\u2019s pro-German faction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1941<\/strong> &#8211; The Federal Communications Commission agreed to let regular scheduling of TV broadcasts by commercial TV stations begin on July 1, 1941. This was the start of network television.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945<\/strong> &#8211; Russians took Berlin after 12 days of fierce house-to-house fighting. The Allies announced the surrender of Nazi troops in Italy and parts of Austria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1946<\/strong> &#8211; Prisoners revolted at\u00a0California&#8217;s Alcatraz prison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1954<\/strong> &#8211; Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals set a new\u00a0major league\u00a0record when he hit 5 home runs against the New York Giants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1960<\/strong> &#8211; Caryl Chessman was executed. He was a convicted sex offender and had become the best selling author while on death row.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1965<\/strong> &#8211; The &#8220;Early Bird&#8221; satellite was used to transmit television pictures across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1969<\/strong> &#8211; The ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) made its maiden voyage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1970<\/strong> &#8211; Student anti-war protesters at\u00a0Ohio&#8217;s Kent State University burn down the campus ROTC building. The National Guard took control of the campus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1974<\/strong> &#8211; Former\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Vice President Spiro T. Agnew was disbarred by the Maryland Court of Appeals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1974<\/strong> &#8211; The filming of &#8220;Jaws&#8221; began in Martha&#8217;s Vineyard,\u00a0MA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1982<\/strong> &#8211; The British submarine\u00a0<i>HMS Conqueror<\/i>\u00a0sank Argentina&#8217;s only cruiser, the\u00a0<i>General Belgrano<\/i>\u00a0during the Falkland Islands War. More than 350 people died.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993<\/strong> &#8211; At Washington&#8217;s National Gallery of Art, an exhibit of 80 paintings from the collection of Dr. Albert C. Barnes opened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993<\/strong> &#8211; Authorities said that they had recovered the remains of David Koresh from the Branch Davidian compound near Waco,\u00a0TX.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994<\/strong> &#8211; Nelson Mandela claimed victory after South Africa&#8217;s first democratic elections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999<\/strong> &#8211; In Panama, Mireya Moscoso de Gruber, of the Armulfista Party, was elected president.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002<\/strong> &#8211; It was reported that Phyllis Diller had retired from touring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a0Yelwa massacre\u00a0concludes. It began on 4 February 2004 when armed Muslims killed 78 Christians at Yelwa.
