It was &#8220;The Perils of Pauline&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1917<\/strong> &#8211; The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Senate voted 90-6 to enter World War I on the Allied side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1918<\/strong> &#8211; The Battle of Somme, an offensive by the British against the German Army ended.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1932<\/strong> &#8211; After five years of research, professor C.G. King, of the University of Pittsburgh, isolated vitamin C.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945<\/strong> &#8211; Hungary was liberated from Nazi occupation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945<\/strong> &#8211; During World War II,\u00a0U.S.\u00a0forces liberated the Nazi death camp Ohrdruf in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1949<\/strong> &#8211; Twelve nations signed a treaty to create The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).<\/p>\n<p><strong>1953<\/strong> &#8211; Fifteen doctors were released by Soviet leaders. At the time they were the tallest building in the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1974<\/strong> &#8211; Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth&#8217;s major league baseball home-run record with 714.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1975<\/strong> &#8211; More than 130 people, most of them children, were killed when a\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Air Force transport plane evacuating Vietnamese orphans crashed just after takeoff from Saigon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979<\/strong> &#8211; Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the president of Pakistan, was executed. He had been convicted of conspiring to murder a political opponent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981<\/strong> &#8211; Henry Cisneros became the first Mexican-American elected mayor of a major\u00a0U.S.\u00a0city, which was San Antonio,\u00a0TX.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1983<\/strong> &#8211; At Cape Canaveral, the space shuttle Challenger took off on its first flight. It was the sixth flight overall for the shuttle program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0U.S. President Reagan\u00a0proposed an international ban on chemical weapons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1985<\/strong> &#8211; In Sudan, a coup ousted President Nimeiry and replaced him with General Dahab.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986<\/strong> &#8211; Wayne Gretzky set an\u00a0NHL\u00a0record with his 213th point of the season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1987<\/strong> &#8211; The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0charged the Soviet Union with wiretapping a\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Embassy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0Arizona\u00a0Governor Evan Mecham was voted out of office by the\u00a0Arizona\u00a0Senate. Mecham was found guilty of diverting state funds to his auto business and of trying to impede an investigation into a death threat to a grand jury witness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1990<\/strong> &#8211; In the\u00a0U.S., securities law violator Ivan Boesky was released from federal custody.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1991<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0Pennsylvanian\u00a0Senator John Heinz and six others were killed when a helicopter collided with Heinz&#8217;s plane over a schoolyard in Merion,\u00a0PA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992<\/strong> &#8211; Sali Berisha became the first non-Marxist president of Albania since World War II.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1994<\/strong> &#8211; Netscape Communications (Mosaic Communications) was founded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1995<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Senator Alfonse D&#8217;Amato ridiculed judge Lance Ito using a mock Japanese accent on a nationally syndicated radio program. D&#8217;Amato apologized two days later for the act.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999<\/strong> &#8211; The Colorado Rockies and the San Diego Padres played the first\u00a0major league\u00a0season opener to be held in Mexico.
