This amino acid\nis used as a softening agent and is derived from either human hair or poultry\nfeathers, and it can be found in many popular brand-name products like Lender&#8217;s,\nEinstein Bros., McDonald&#8217;s and Pizza Hut.<\/li><li><strong>Naan-<\/strong>The very &#8216;desi&#8217; naan that is commonly made in India might not be\n100 percent vegetarian. It is a staple in Mughlai\/Indian cuisine, but many a\ntimes the dough for naan is kneaded in eggs for giving the bread softness and\nelasticity.<\/li><li><strong>Beer and Wine:<\/strong>&nbsp;Egg\nwhite albumen and gelatine (also known as casein is a product derived from\nanimal body parts) are used in the beer brewing or winemaking process. Some\nmanufacturers also use isinglass, a gelatin-like substance collected from\nbladders of the freshwater fish like the sturgeon to clarify their final\nproduct. <\/li><li><strong>Sweets\nand Candies:<\/strong>&nbsp;Many varieties of jelly, marshmallows, gummy\nbears and chewing gums contain gelatine- a protein derived from the collagen in\ncow or pig bones, skin and connective tissues is used as a thickening or\nstabilizing agent. Others are coated in shellac or contain a red dye called\ncarmine, which is made from cochineal scale&nbsp;insects.<\/li><li><strong>Refined Sugar:<\/strong>&nbsp; Sugar isn&#8217;t naturally white, so manufacturers\nprocess it using bone char, which is made from the bones of cattle. To avoid\nsugar filtered with bone char, purchase unrefined\/unprocessed sugar or buy\nfrom&nbsp;brands&nbsp;that don&#8217;t use bone-char filters.<\/li><li><strong>Vanilla Ice Cream<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Part\nof the flavour and smell that you identify as vanilla in ice cream comes from\nthe sacs of beavers. Beavers secrete a substance called&nbsp;castoreum that\nsmells like vanilla. Because of this smell, it is used as part of a vanilla\nsubstitute. The additive is most often used in baked goods as a vanilla\nsubstitute, but it&#8217;s also been used in alcoholic beverages, puddings, ice\ncream, candy and chewing gum.<\/li><li><strong>Cheese:<\/strong> There are certain kinds of cheese that are made from enzymes\npresent in the gut of animals. The enzyme is called either rennet or chymosin,\nwhich is derived from the stomach of young animals such as lambs and calves.\nFor instance, Parmesan cheese is usually made using the inner linings of the\ncows&#8217; stomach.<\/li><li><strong>Orange Juice:<\/strong> Some of the juices often\ncontain omega-3s, which are sometimes derived from fish like anchovies,\ntilapia, and sardines. Also for purification of some juice (especially\nmultivitamin-juice) gelatine is used.<\/li><li><strong>S<\/strong><strong>alad Dressing<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> The sauces or the dressings that make a bland salad\nlook tasty, may contain egg. But, the salad dressings you have to watch out for\nare the ones with&nbsp;fish&nbsp;in\nthem. The fish labelling may be concealed in the Worcestershire sauce\nlabelling. <\/li><li><strong>Potato Chips: <\/strong>Some\nflavoured potato chips, especially those flavoured with powdered cheese can\ncontain casein, whey or animal-derived enzymes. For instance The BBQ flavoured\nchips are fried in animal fat or might use meaty flavours for giving that smoky\nand meaty taste.&nbsp; Some branded products also use use bacon flavour to\nenhance the flavour.<\/li><li><strong>Roasted Peanuts<\/strong>:&nbsp;Gelatine\nis sometimes used when manufacturing roasted peanuts in order to help salt and\nspices stick to the peanuts better.<\/li><li><strong>Pastries<\/strong>:\nSome&nbsp;pastries&nbsp;are made with\nsuet. Suet is the fatty tissue on the kidneys and loins of animals like cows\nand sheep.<\/li><li><strong>Yogurt:<\/strong> The redness of yogurt doesn\u2019t come from\nstrawberries but from Cochineals&nbsp;scale\ninsects that are grounded to make a red dye.<\/li><li><strong>Chewing\nGum:<\/strong> Stearic acid which is obtained from animal fats, mostly from a\npig\u2019s stomach is used in many chewing gums. <\/li><li><strong>Pasta:<\/strong>&nbsp;Some\ntypes of pasta, especially fresh pasta, contain eggs.<\/li><li><strong>Omega-3 Products:<\/strong> Many products with labels that boast\ntheir heart-healthy ingredients contain omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish.\nFor example, Tropicana&#8217;s Heart Healthy orange juice&#8217;s label lists tilapia, sardine\nand anchovy as ingredients.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re a vegetarian or vegan, you may be aware of the obvious foods to avoid like meat, fish, dairy and bee-products, but some foods you might expect to be 100% vegan sometimes contain one or more animal-derived ingredients.
