1904<\/strong> – The St. Louis Police Department became the first to use fingerprinting.<\/p>\n

1919<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Congress enacted the Volstead Act, also known as the National Prohibition Act. Prohibition was repealed in 1933 with the passing of the 21st Amendment to the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Constitution.<\/p>\n

1922<\/strong> – Benito Mussolini took control of the Italian government and introduced fascism to Italy.<\/p>\n

1936<\/strong> – The Statue of Liberty was rededicated by\u00a0U.S. President Roosevelt\u00a0on its 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n

1940<\/strong> – During World War II, Italy invaded Greece.<\/p>\n

1949<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President Harry Truman\u00a0swore in Eugenie Moore Anderson as the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0ambassador to Denmark. Anderson was the first woman to hold the post of ambassador.<\/p>\n

1958<\/strong> – Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was elected Pope. He took the name, John XXIII.<\/p>\n

1962<\/strong> – Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev informed the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0that he had ordered the dismantling of Soviet missile bases in Cuba.<\/p>\n

1965<\/strong> – Pope Paul VI issued a decree absolving Jews of collective guilt for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

1965<\/strong> – The Gateway Arch along the waterfront in St. Louis,\u00a0MO, was completed.<\/p>\n

1976<\/strong> – John D. Ehrlichman, a former aide to U.S. President Richard Nixon, entered a federal prison camp in Safford, AZ, to begin serving his sentence for Watergate-related convictions.<\/p>\n

1982<\/strong> – Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev condemned the U.S. for an arms buildup.<\/p>\n

1983<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution “deeply deploring” the ongoing\u00a0U.S.-led invasion of Grenada.<\/p>\n

1985<\/strong> – John A. Walker Jr. and his son, Michael Lance Walker, pled guilty to charges of spying for the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

1986<\/strong> – The centennial of the Statue of Liberty was celebrated in New York.<\/p>\n

1988<\/strong> – Roussel Uclaf, a French manufacturer that produces the abortion pill RU486, announced it would resume distribution of the drug after the government of France demanded it does so.<\/p>\n

1990<\/strong> – Iraq announced that it was halting gasoline rationing.<\/p>\n

1993<\/strong> – Ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, called for a complete blockade of Haiti to force out the military leaders.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President Clinton\u00a0visited Kuwait and implied that all the troops there would be home by Christmas.<\/p>\n

1996<\/strong> – The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained a record of 337.17 points (or 5%). The day before the Dow had dropped 554.26 points (or 7%).<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby is indicted due to his involvement in the\u00a0Plame affair.<\/p>\n

2006<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A funeral service takes place at the\u00a0Bykivnia graves\u00a0for those Ukrainians who were killed by the Soviet secret police.<\/p>\n

2007<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Cristina Fern\u00e1ndez de Kirchner\u00a0becomes the first woman elected President of Argentina.<\/p>\n

2009<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a028 October 2009 Peshawar bombing\u00a0kills 117 and wounds 213.<\/p>\n

2009<\/strong> \u2013 NASA successfully launches the\u00a0Ares I-X\u00a0mission, the only rocket launch for its short-lived Constellation program.<\/p>\n

2013<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Five people are killed and 38 are injured after a\u00a0car crashes\u00a0into barriers at the Tiananmen Square in China.<\/p>\n

2014<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A rocket carrying NASA’s\u00a0Cygnus CRS Orb-3\u00a0resupply mission to the International Space Station explodes seconds after taking off from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Virginia.<\/p>\n
