1938<\/strong> – Du Pont announced “nylon” as the new name for its new synthetic yarn.<\/p>\n

1947<\/strong> – “You Bet Your Life,” the radio show starring Grouch Marx, premiered on ABC. It was later shown on NBC television.<\/p>\n

1954<\/strong> – Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were divorced. They had been married on January 14, 1954.<\/p>\n

1954<\/strong> – The first Walt Disney television show “Disneyland” premiered on ABC.

1962<\/strong> – The Soviet Union adds to the Cuban Missile Crisis by calling for the dismantling of a U.S.\u00a0missile basis in Turkey.\u00a0U.S. President Kennedy\u00a0agreed to the new aspect of the agreement.<\/p>\n

1978<\/strong> – Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin were named winners of the Nobel Peace Prize for their progress toward achieving a Middle East accord.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Justice Department announced that the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0prison population had exceeded one million for the first time in American history.<\/p>\n

1997<\/strong> – The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 554.26 points. The stock market was shut down for the first time since the 1981 assassination attempt on U.S. President Reagan.<\/p>\n

1998<\/strong> – The reunion episode “CHiPs ’99” aired for the first time on the cable network TNT.<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong> – Bank of America Corp. announced it had agreed to buy FleetBoston Financial Corp. The deal created the second largest banking company in the U.S.<\/p>\n

2014<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Britain withdraws from Afghanistan at the end of\u00a0Operation Herrick, after 12 years four months and seven days.<\/p>\n

2017<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Catalonia\u00a0declares independence from\u00a0Spain.<\/p>\n

2018<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A gunman opens fire on a\u00a0Pittsburgh synagogue\u00a0killing 11 and injuring 6, including 4 police officers.<\/p>\n
