She was 63 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1929<\/strong> &#8211; In the U.S., investors dumped more than 13 million shares on the stock market. The day is known as &#8220;Black Tuesday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1931<\/strong> &#8211; The upper level of the George Washington Bridge opened for traffic between\u00a0New York\u00a0and\u00a0New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1939<\/strong> &#8211; Nylon stockings were sold to the public for the first time in Wilmington,\u00a0DE.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1940<\/strong> &#8211; In the\u00a0U.S., the 40-hour workweek went into effect under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945<\/strong> &#8211; The United Nations (UN) was formally established less than a month after the end of World War II. The Charter was ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1948<\/strong> &#8211; The term &#8220;cold war&#8221; was used for the first time. It was in a speech by Bernard Baruch before the Senate War Investigating Committee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1949<\/strong> &#8211; The cornerstone for the U.N. Headquarters was laid in New York City.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1960<\/strong> &#8211; All remaining American-owned property in Cuba was nationalized. The process of nationalizing all\u00a0U.S.\u00a0and foreign-owned property in Cuban had begun on August 6, 1960.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1962<\/strong> &#8211; During the Cuban Missile Crisis,\u00a0U.S.\u00a0military forces went on the highest alert in the postwar era in preparation for a possible full-scale war with the Soviet Union. The U.S. blockade of Cuba officially began on this day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1969<\/strong> &#8211; Richard Burton bought his wife Elizabeth Taylor a 69-carat Cartier diamond ring for $1.5 million. Burton presented the ring to Taylor several days later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1986<\/strong> &#8211; Britain broke off relations with Syria after a Jordanian was convicted in an attempted bombing. The evidence in the trial led to the belief that Syria was involved in the attack on the Israeli jetliner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1992<\/strong> &#8211; The Toronto Blue Jays became the first non-U.S. team to win the\u00a0World Series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001<\/strong> &#8211; The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0House of Representatives approved legislation that gave police the power to secretly search homes, tap all of a person&#8217;s telephone conversation and track people&#8217;s use of the Internet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001<\/strong> &#8211; The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0stamp &#8220;United We Stand&#8221; was dedicated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001<\/strong> &#8211; NASA&#8217;s\u00a0<i>2001 Mars Odyssey<\/i>\u00a0spacecraft successfully entered orbit around Mars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002<\/strong> &#8211; Microsoft Corp. and Walt Disney Co. announced the release of an upgraded MSN Internet service with Disney content. Disney movies, music, and books<\/p>\n<p><strong>2003<\/strong> &#8211; In London, the last commercial supersonic Concorde flight landed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Arsenal Football Club\u00a0loses to Manchester United, ending a row of unbeaten matches at 49 matches, which is the record in the Premier League.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Hurricane Wilma\u00a0makes landfall in Florida, resulting in 35 direct and 26 indirect fatalities and causing $20.6B USD in damage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Change 1, the first satellite in the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, is launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2008<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 &#8220;Bloody Friday&#8221; saw many of the world&#8217;s stock exchanges experience the worst declines in their history, with drops of around 10% in most indices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2014<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The China National Space Administration launches an experimental lunar mission,\u00a0Change 5-T1, which will loop behind the Moon and return to Earth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2015<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A driver\u00a0crashes\u00a0into the Oklahoma State
