1944<\/strong> – During World War II, the German city of Aachen was captured by\u00a0U.S.\u00a0troops.<\/p>\n

1945<\/strong> – Women in France were allowed to vote for the first time.<\/p>\n

1959<\/strong> – The Guggenheim Museum was opened to the public in New York. The building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.<\/p>\n

1986<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0ordered 55 Soviet diplomats to leave. The action was in reaction to the Soviet Union expelling five American diplomats.<\/p>\n

1991<\/strong> – Jesse Turner, an American hostage in Lebanon, was released after nearly five years of being imprisoned.<\/p>\n

1993<\/strong> – The play “The Twilight of the Golds” opened.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong> – North Korea and the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0signed an agreement requiring North Korea to halt its nuclear program and agree to inspections.<\/p>\n

1998<\/strong> – The New York Yankees set a\u00a0major league baseball\u00a0record of 125 victories for the regular and postseason combined.<\/p>\n

1998<\/strong> – Cancer specialist Dr. Jane Henney became the FDA’s first female commissioner.<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong> – The U.S. Senate voted to ban what was known as partial-birth abortions.<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong> – North Korea rejected\u00a0U.S. President George W. Bush’s offer of a written pledge not to attack in exchange for the communist nation agreeing to end its nuclear weapons program.<\/p>\n
