1927<\/strong> – “The Jazz Singer” opened in New York starring Al Jolson. The film was based on the short story “The Day of Atonement” by Sampson Raphaelson.<\/p>\n

1928<\/strong> – War-torn China was reunited under the Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek.<\/p>\n

1937<\/strong> – “Hobby Lobby” debuted on CBS radio.<\/p>\n

1939<\/strong> – Adolf Hitler denied any intention to wage war against Britain and France in an address to Reichstag.<\/p>\n

1948<\/strong> – “Summer and Smoke” by Tennessee Williams opened on Broadway.<\/p>\n

1949<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S.\u00a0president Harry Truman signed the Mutual Defense Assistance Act. The act provided $1.3 billion in the form of military aid to NATO countries.<\/p>\n

1954<\/strong> – E.L. Lyon became the first male nurse for the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Army.<\/p>\n

1961<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S.\u00a0president John F. Kennedy advised American families to build or buy bomb shelters to protect them in the event of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

1962<\/strong> – Robert Goulet began the role of Sir Lancelot in “Camelot”.<\/p>\n

1973<\/strong> – Egypt and Syria attacked Israel in an attempt to win back territory that had been lost in the third Arab-Israel war. Support for Israel led to a devastating oil embargo against many nations including the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0and Great Britain on October 17, 1973. The war lasted 2 weeks.<\/p>\n

1979<\/strong> – Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit the White House.<\/p>\n

1991<\/strong> – Elizabeth Taylor married Larry Fortensky. The ceremony was held at Michael Jackson’s estate near Los Angeles,\u00a0CA. It was Taylor’s 8th marriage and Fortensky’s 3rd.<\/p>\n

1992<\/strong> – Ross Perot appeared in his first paid broadcast on CBS-TV after entering the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0presidential race.<\/p>\n

1995<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The first planet orbiting another sun,\u00a051 Pegasi b, is discovered.<\/p>\n

2007<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Jason Lewis\u00a0completes the first human-powered circumnavigation of the Earth.<\/p>\n
