1990<\/strong> – U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar met with the Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz to try and negotiate a solution to the crisis in the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n

1990<\/strong> – East and West Germany signed a treaty that meant the harmonizing of political and legal systems.<\/p>\n

1991<\/strong> – Uzbekistan and Kirghiziz declared their independence from the Soviet Union. They were the 9th and 10th republics to announce their plans to secede.<\/p>\n

1991<\/strong> – In a “Solidarity Day” protest hundreds of thousands of union members marched in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n

1993<\/strong> – Russia withdrew its last soldiers from Lithuania.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong> – A cease-fire was declared by the Irish Republican Army after 25 years of bloodshed in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong> – Russia officially ended its military presence in former East Germany and the Baltics after a half-century.<\/p>\n

1998<\/strong> – A ballistic missile was fired over Japan by North Korea. The missile landed in stages in the waters around Japan. There was no known target.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The first of a series of\u00a0bombings\u00a0in Moscow kills one person and wounds 40 others.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong> \u2013 A\u00a0LAPA\u00a0Boeing 737-200\u00a0crashes during takeoff\u00a0from\u00a0Jorge Newbury Airport\u00a0in\u00a0Buenos Aires, killing 65, including two on the ground.<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a02005 Al-Aaimmah bridge stampede\u00a0in\u00a0Baghdad\u00a0kills 953 people.<\/p>\n

2006<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Edvard Munch’s famous painting\u00a0The Scream<\/i>, stolen on August 22, 2004, is recovered in a raid by Norwegian police.<\/p>\n

2016<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Brazil’s President\u00a0Dilma Rousseff\u00a0is\u00a0impeached\u00a0and removed from office.<\/p>\n
