1914<\/strong> – Austria-Hungary invaded Russia.<\/p>\n

1921<\/strong> – Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with polio.<\/p>\n

1927<\/strong> – Mount Rushmore was formally dedicated. The individual faces of the presidents were dedicated later.<\/p>\n

1944<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S.\u00a0forces defeated the remaining Japanese resistance on Guam.<\/p>\n

1945<\/strong> – The day after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced they would surrender. The only condition was that the status of Emperor Hirohito would remain unchanged.<\/p>\n

1947<\/strong> – William Odom completed an around-the-world flight. He set the solo record by completing the flight in 73 hours and 5 minutes.<\/p>\n

1948<\/strong> – On ABC, “Candid Camera” made its TV debut. The original title was “Candid Microphone.”<\/p>\n

1949<\/strong> – In the\u00a0U.S., the National Military Establishment had its name changed to the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n

1954<\/strong> – Construction began on the St. Lawrence Seaway.<\/p>\n

1965<\/strong> – In Austin,\u00a0TX, a fire burned part of the 20th floor of the 27-story University of Texas main building. A collection that contained items once owned by escape artist Harry Houdini and circus magnate P. T. Barnum was damaged by smoke and water.<\/p>\n

1971<\/strong> – Harmon Killebrew (Minnesota Twins) got his 500th and 501st home runs of his\u00a0major league baseball\u00a0career.<\/p>\n

1973<\/strong> – Arnold Palmer did not make the cut for the final two rounds of the PGA Golf Championship. It was the first time in his career.<\/p>\n

1981<\/strong> – Pete Rose hit a single and broke the National League all-time hit record with his 3,631 hits.<\/p>\n

1988<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President Reagan\u00a0signed a measure that provided $20,000 payments to Japanese-Americans who were interned by the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0government during World War II.<\/p>\n

1993<\/strong> – A massive deficit-reduction bill was signed into law by\u00a0U.S.\u00a0President Bill Clinton.<\/p>\n

1994<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President Clinton\u00a0claimed presidential immunity when he asked a federal judge to dismiss, at least for the time being, a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Paula Corbin Jones.<\/p>\n

1995<\/strong> – Norma McCorvey, “Jane Roe” of the 1973\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, announced that she had joined the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong> – Near an India-Pakistan border area an Indian fighter jet shot down a Pakistani naval aircraft. Sixteen people were killed.<\/p>\n

2003<\/strong> – Ekaterina Dmitriev and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko were married. Malenchenko was about 240 miles above the earth in the international space station. It was the first-ever marriage from space.<\/p>\n

2009<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Twenty people are killed in\u00a0Handlov\u00e1,\u00a0Trencin Region, in the deadliest\u00a0mining disaster\u00a0in\u00a0Slovakia’s history.<\/p>\n

2012<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a0Marikana massacre\u00a0begins near\u00a0Rustenburg, South Africa, resulting in the deaths of 47 people.<\/p>\n

2014<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Forty people are killed when\u00a0Sepahan Airlines Flight 5915\u00a0crashes at Tehran’s\u00a0Mehrabad Airport.<\/p>\n

2018<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A\u00a0shooting\u00a0occurs in\u00a0Fredericton,\u00a0New Brunswick, killing four people, including two police officers.<\/p>\n

2018<\/strong> \u2013 A\u00a0Horizon Airlines\u00a0Bombardier Q400\u00a0crashes\u00a0on\u00a0Ketron Island, Washington\u00a0after being stolen by a mechanic.\u00a0Oregon National Guard\u00a0F-15\u00a0fighter jets intercepted the plane, but the pilot deliberately crashed before they could shoot it down.<\/p>\n

2018<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0anti-government protest\u00a0takes place in\u00a0Victory Square, in\u00a0Bucharest,\u00a0Romania. However, towards the end of the protest, the protesters are attacked by the\u00a0Gendarmerie, leading to 452 injuries.<\/p>\n
