1910<\/strong> – A.J. Fisher received a patent for the electric washing machine.<\/p>\n

1930<\/strong> – Betty Boop had her beginning in “Dizzy Dishes” created by Max Fleischer.<\/p>\n

1936<\/strong> – Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal at the Berlin Olympics. He was the first American to win four medals in one Olympics.<\/p>\n

1942<\/strong> – Mohandas K. Gandhi was arrested in Britain. He was not released until 1944.<\/p>\n

1942<\/strong> – CBS radio debuted “Our Secret Weapon.”<\/p>\n

1944<\/strong> – The Forest Service and Wartime Advertising Council created “Smokey the Bear.”<\/p>\n

1945<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. The bombing came three days after the bombing of Hiroshima. About 74,000 people were killed. Japan surrendered on August 14.<\/p>\n

1945<\/strong> – The first network television broadcast occurred in Washington,\u00a0DC. The program announced the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan.<\/p>\n

1956<\/strong> – The first statewide, state-supported educational television network went on the air in\u00a0Alabama.<\/p>\n

1965<\/strong> – Singapore proclaimed its independence from the Malaysian Federation.<\/p>\n

1973<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Senate committee investigating the Watergate affair filed suit against President Richard Nixon.<\/p>\n

1974<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. PresidentRichard Nixon formally resigned. Gerald R. Ford took his place and became the 38th president of the U.S.<\/p>\n

1975<\/strong> – The New Orleans Superdome as officially opened when the Saints played the Houston Oilers in exhibition football. The new Superdome cost $163 million to build.<\/p>\n

1981<\/strong> – Major league baseball teams resumed play at the conclusion of the first mid-season players\u2019 strike.<\/p>\n

1984<\/strong> – Daley Thompson, of Britain, won his second successive Olympic decathlon.<\/p>\n

1985<\/strong> – Arthur J. Walker, a retired Navy officer, was found guilty of seven counts of spying for the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

1988<\/strong> – Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) was traded. The trade was at Gretzky’s request. He was sent to the Los Angeles Kings.<\/p>\n

1996<\/strong> – Boris Yeltsin was sworn in as president of Russia for the second time.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong> – Russian President Boris Yeltsin fired Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin and his entire cabinet for the fourth time in 17 months.<\/p>\n

2001<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President George W. Bush\u00a0announced he would support federal funding for limited medical research on embryonic stem cells.<\/p>\n

2004<\/strong> – Donald Duck received the 2,257th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.<\/p>\n

2004<\/strong> – Trump Hotel and Casino Resorts announced plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

2006<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 At least 21 suspected terrorists were arrested in the\u00a02006 transatlantic aircraft plot\u00a0that happened in the United Kingdom. The arrests were made in London,\u00a0Birmingham, and\u00a0High Wycombe\u00a0in an overnight operation.<\/p>\n

2013<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Gunmen\u00a0open fire\u00a0at a\u00a0Sunni\u00a0mosque in the city of\u00a0Quetta\u00a0killing at least ten people and injuring 30.<\/p>\n

2014<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African American male in\u00a0Ferguson, Missouri, was\u00a0shot and killed\u00a0by a\u00a0Ferguson\u00a0police officer after reportedly assaulting the officer and attempting to steal his weapon, sparking\u00a0protests and unrest\u00a0in the city.<\/p>\n
