He was the first American to win four medals in one Olympics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1942<\/strong> &#8211; Mohandas K. Gandhi was arrested in Britain. He was not released until 1944.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1942<\/strong> &#8211; CBS radio debuted &#8220;Our Secret Weapon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1944<\/strong> &#8211; The Forest Service and Wartime Advertising Council created &#8220;Smokey the Bear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945<\/strong> &#8211; The\u00a0U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. The bombing came three days after the bombing of Hiroshima. About 74,000 people were killed. Japan surrendered on August 14.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945<\/strong> &#8211; The first network television broadcast occurred in Washington,\u00a0DC. The program announced the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1956<\/strong> &#8211; The first statewide, state-supported educational television network went on the air in\u00a0Alabama.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1965<\/strong> &#8211; Singapore proclaimed its independence from the Malaysian Federation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1973<\/strong> &#8211; The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Senate committee investigating the Watergate affair filed suit against President Richard Nixon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1974<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0U.S. PresidentRichard Nixon formally resigned. Gerald R. The new Superdome cost $163 million to build.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981<\/strong> &#8211; Major league baseball teams resumed play at the conclusion of the first mid-season players\u2019 strike.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984<\/strong> &#8211; Daley Thompson, of Britain, won his second successive Olympic decathlon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1985<\/strong> &#8211; Arthur J. Walker, a retired Navy officer, was found guilty of seven counts of spying for the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988<\/strong> &#8211; Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) was traded. The trade was at Gretzky&#8217;s request. He was sent to the Los Angeles Kings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1996<\/strong> &#8211; Boris Yeltsin was sworn in as president of Russia for the second time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999<\/strong> &#8211; Russian President Boris Yeltsin fired Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin and his entire cabinet for the fourth time in 17 months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0U.S. President George W. Bush\u00a0announced he would support federal funding for limited medical research on embryonic stem cells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong> &#8211; Donald Duck received the 2,257th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004<\/strong> &#8211; Trump Hotel and Casino Resorts announced plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 At least 21 suspected terrorists were arrested in the\u00a02006 transatlantic aircraft plot\u00a0that happened in the United Kingdom.
