1914<\/strong> – Germany invaded France.<\/p>\n

1928<\/strong> – The U.S. Treasure Department issued a new bill that was one third smaller than the previous U.S. bills.<\/p>\n

1934<\/strong> – The U.S. Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling striking down the government\u2019s attempt to ban the controversial James Joyce novel \u201cUlysses\u201d.<\/p>\n

1942<\/strong> – U.S. forces landed at Guadalcanal, marking the start of the first major allied offensive in the Pacific during World War II.<\/p>\n

1947<\/strong> – The balsa wood raft Kon-Tiki, which had carried a six-man crew 4,300 miles across the Pacific Ocean, crashed into a reef in a Polynesian archipelago.<\/p>\n

1959<\/strong> \u2013 The U.S. launched Explorer 6, which sent back a picture of the Earth.<\/p>\n

1960<\/strong> \u2013 The Cuban Catholic church condemned the rise of communism in Cuba. Fidel Castro then banned all religious TV and radio broadcasts.<\/p>\n

1981<\/strong> \u2013 After 128 years of publication, \u201cThe Washington stars\u201d ceased all operations.<\/p>\n

1983<\/strong> \u2013 AT & T employees went on strike.<\/p>\n

1987<\/strong> \u2013 The Presidents of five Central American nations, met in Guatemala City and signed an 11-point agreement designed to bring peace to their region.<\/p>\n

1990<\/strong> – U.S. President George H.W. Bush ordered U.S. troops and warplanes to Saudi Arabia to guard against a possible invasion by Iraq.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong> – Tony Gwynn (San Diego Padres) got the 3,000th<\/sup> hit of his major league career.<\/p>\n
