History of 2 August<\/h2>\n

1921<\/strong> – Eight White Sox players were acquitted of throwing the 1919 World Series.<\/p>\n

1926<\/strong> – John Barrymore and Mary Astor starred in the first showing of the Vitaphone system. The system was the combining of picture and sound for movies.<\/p>\n

1938<\/strong> – Bright yellow baseballs were used in a major league baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals. It was hoped that the balls would be easier to see.<\/p>\n

1939<\/strong> – Albert Einstein signed a letter to President Roosevelt urging the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0to have an atomic weapons research program.<\/p>\n

1939<\/strong> –\u00a0U.S. President Roosevelt\u00a0signed the Hatch Act. The act prohibited civil service employees from taking an active part in political campaigns.<\/p>\n

1943<\/strong> – The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Navy patrol torpedo boat, PT-109, sank after being attacked by a Japanese destroyer. The boat was under the command of Lt. John F. Kennedy.<\/p>\n

1945<\/strong> – The Allied conference at Potsdam was concluded.<\/p>\n

1964<\/strong> – The Pentagon reported the first of two North Vietnamese attacks on\u00a0U.S.\u00a0destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin.<\/p>\n

1983<\/strong> – U.S. House of Representatives approved a law that designated the third Monday of January would be a federal holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The law was signed by President Reagon on November 2.<\/p>\n

1987<\/strong> – “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was re-released. The film was 50 years old at the time of its re-release.<\/p>\n

1990<\/strong> – Iraq invaded the oil-rich country of Kuwait. Iraq claimed that Kuwait had driven down oil prices by exceeding production quotas set by OPEC.<\/p>\n

1995<\/strong> – China ordered the expulsion of two\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Air Force officers. The two were said to have been caught spying on military sights.<\/p>\n

1999<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The\u00a0Gaisal train disaster\u00a0claims 285 lives in\u00a0Assam, India.<\/p>\n

2005<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Air France Flight 358\u00a0lands at\u00a0Toronto Pearson International Airport\u00a0and runs off the runway, causing the plane to burst into flames leaving 12 injuries and no fatalities.<\/p>\n

2014<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 At least 146 people were killed and more than 114 injured in a\u00a0factory explosion in Kunshan, Jiangsu, China.<\/p>\n

2018<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Apple Inc.\u00a0became the first U.S. company to be valued at over\u00a0$1 trillion.<\/p>\n
