The name of the river Indus means ‘Sea or a large group of water’. At first people of Iran started calling it ‘Hendu‘, then the Greeks started calling it ‘Indos‘ and the Romans changed the name to ‘Indus’ and ultimately the name India was framed from the ‘Indus’.

Like other rivers, this river also originates from the mountains of the Himalayas. This river flows between Tibet and Kashmir. The Indus passes through the northern part of the Ganges Mountains through the middle of Pakistan in the southwest. Finally, this river passes through Karachi and joins the Arabian Sea. This river has changed its path many times. By 1245 AD it flowed in the western region of Multan.

Biggest source of water in Pakistan

The Indus River flows with a speed of about 243 cubic kilometers. The amount of water in this river is very high, due to which this river fulfills the need for water for agriculture in some villages of Pakistan.

Indus river tributaries

There are five tributaries of the Indus River are Iravati, Vipasa, Vitasta, Chandrabhaga, and Shatadru. The longest river out of all these is Shatadru river.

Let us also tell you that the rivers which are separated from this river also join it in the end, there are five such rivers – Sutlej, Chenab, Ravi, Jhelum, Vyas, etc. flowing through the Punjab of India enters into the Indus river through Pakistan. After that, these rivers merge into the sea.
