Virat Kohli is an Indian international cricketer who currently captains the India national team. A right-handed top-order batsman, Kohli is regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world. He plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League and has been the team’s captain since 2013. Born and raised in Delhi, Kohli represented the city’s cricket team at various age-group levels before making his first-class debut in 2006.

Virat Kohli was born on 5 November 1988 in Delhi into a Punjabi family. His father, Prem Kohli, worked as a criminal lawyer and his mother, Saroj Kohli, is a housewife. He has an older brother, Vikas, and an older sister, Bhavna. According to his family, when he was three-years-old, Kohli would pick up a cricket bat, start swinging it and ask his father to bowl at him.

  • Kohli’s nickname is Cheeku. Former Delhi coach Ajit Chaudhary gave him the name when he joined the Delhi Ranji team.
  • He captained the India Under-19 team to the U-19 World Cup in 2008.
  • In 2006, he was playing a Ranji match against Karnataka when his father passed away. But he batted on the next day and scored 90 runs.
  • He made his ODI debut in 2008 and was part of the 2011 World Cup winning team.
  • Playing against Bangladesh in the 2011 World Cup opener, he became the first and only Indian to score a century on World Cup debut.
  • In 2012, he was named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year. At the age of 23!
  • Kohli has 4 tattoos on his body, including a golden dragon and a samurai warrior on his hand. They are supposed to bring him good luck.
  • His favorite recipe? Mutton biryani and kheer. Especially when it’s cooked by his mother.
  • He was honored with the Arjuna Award by President Pranab Mukherjee in 2013.
