10 mind blowing facts that will change your perception about things

  1. Most maps of the world you see are incorrect. On most maps, the Mercator projection – first developed in 1569 – is still used. This method has been very inaccurate. This method makes Alaska appear as large as Brazil while in realty Brazil is 5 times larger than Alaska in area.
As another example, the map shows Greenland 14 times larger than it actually is.
For a map to be completely accurate, it would need to be life-size and round, the same way the itself Earth is, not flat.
  2. Earth’s rotation is changing speedIt’s actually slowing. This means that, on average, the length of a day increases by around 1.8 seconds per century. 600 million years ago a day lasted just 21 hours.
  3. Most people stroke cats the wrong way. Research shows cats often just tolerate it for the food and attention. Cats likes to be stroking under the chin, cheeks and base of the ears. They mostly hates to be touched under their belly and the base of their tail, and touching there more likely lead to annoy them rather than to bond with them.
  4. You can actually die laughing. You you read it right, and many people already have died while laughing. It is typically due to the fact that intense laughter may cause a heart attack or suffocation. Thats why comedy shows should come with a warning!
  5. Football teams wearing red kits play better.
The colour of your clothes can affect how you’re perceived by others and change how you feel. A review of football matches in the last 55 years, for example, showed that teams wearing a red kit consistently played better in home matches than teams in any other colour.
  6. Wind turbines kill between 10,000 and 100,000 birds each year in the UK. This number however is much less than that of the number of birds killed by domestic cats in the UK, which is whooping 55 millions birds per year!  Interestingly, a study in Norway found that painting one of the blades of a wind turbine black can reduce bird deaths by 70 per cent.
  7. The longest anyone has held their breath underwater is over 24.5 minutes.
The world record for breath-holding underwater was achieved by Croatian Budimir Šobat on 27 March 2021, who held his breath for a total of 24 minutes and 37 seconds. On average, a human can hold their breath between 30-90 seconds.
  8. It’s actually fine to drink alcohol on (most) antibiotics. It’s unlikely that drinking alcohol in moderation will cause a big problem if you’re taking a common antibiotic (although there are exceptions, particularly metronidazole).
  9. Glass sponges can live for 15,000 years.
This makes them one of the longest-living organisms on Earth. The immortal jellyfish, however, could theoretically live forever (but scientists aren’t sure)
  10. You see stars as they were 4,000 years ago.
Without a telescope, all the stars we can see lie within about 4,000 light-years of us. That means at most you’re seeing stars as they were 4,000 years ago, around when the pyramids were being built in Egypt.Struggling with having a good sleep?
